PSAL Eligibility
Eligibilty to play and compete in PSAL-sanctioned events, a student-athlete must meet attendance and academics requirements. Failure to comply will ultimately result in the student-athlete to become ineligible to participate. Please note, you can become ineligible even after initially becoming eligible if you cease to meet the requirements at some point during the year.
Attendance
- Student-athletes must have an attendance record of at least 90% in the most recent marking period.
- Thus, a maximum of 4 absences. Any absences above 4 must be officially excused in the DOE’s attendance system (ATS) in order to remain eligible.
- Absences are excused with an official absence note, signed by all of the student-athlete’s teachers, with supporting documentation if necessary. Your guidance counselor can be especially helpful in this case. If the notes are not handed in within the term, the notes will not be accepted.
- Special Note Fall athletes must hand in their note(s) before the last day of school.
- As per DOE attendance policy, WE CANNOT ACCEPT ANY ABSENCE NOTES IN AUGUST/SEPTEMBER OF THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
- The PSAL is only accepting excused absences in the official ATS system.
Academics
A student-athlete must earn 5 credits plus 1 physical education credit, and must have an overall average of 65 or higher, in the most recent report card.
- For the start of the fall season, the most recent report card is the final report card of the previous school year, distributed in June.
- For the start of the winter season, the most recent report card is the 1st marking period report card, usually distributed in early November.
- For the start of the spring season, the most recent report card is the 2nd marking period report card, distributed at the end of the fall term in January.
Over the previous two terms (the most recent January and June report cards relative to the PSAL season), a student-athlete must have earned 10 credits plus 2 physical education credits.
- This rule only applies to current 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, as current freshmen do not have two terms of high school grades to apply.
- Freshmen are only held to the 5+1 standard during their freshman year.
An ineligible student-athlete will appear on the Inactive Roster on PSAL.org, and is not allowed to compete in any games/matches, however, they are still allowed to participate in practices.
