Special Education at Westinghouse
The purpose of special education services at Westinghouse is to provide a free and appropriate education for students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. They receive all necessary supports and services to equitably access the general education curriculum. We program them for all Regents classes to allow them the opportunity of an Advanced Regents Diploma. We also afford them the opportunity to take Advanced Placement classes under the AP for All initiative. Our services support them in reaching their full potential academically, socially, and personally, and in becoming thriving members of society.
The special education support staff:
- develops and strengthens students’ self-confidence and independence
- discovers and nourishes students’ talents
- works toward meeting annual goals
- gathers data for writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and for monitoring progress of students’ skills
- Supports students through Differentiated Instruction (DI) and Specially Designed Instruction (SDI)
- Fosters relationships with parents to further support student achievement
